A Distributed Internet Cache
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper outlines the need for replication of resources on the Internet to combat the huge growth in user population and bandwidth requirements. It describes deeciencies in an existing hierarchical ca-ching scheme for document replication and presents an alternative approach that more widely distributes the load across multiple servers, and provides additional resource discovery features. A simulation experiment which compares the distributed and hierarchical approaches is described and its results presented. These results indicate the applicability of the distributed caching scheme in the majority of situations considered.

Hash-Based Query Caching Method for Distributed Web Caching in Wide Area Networks
Distributed Web caching allows multiple clients to quickly access a pool of popular Web pages. Conventional distributed Web caching schemes, e.g., the Internet cache protocol and hash routing, require the sending of many query messages among cache servers and/or impose a large load on the cache servers when they are widely dispersed. To overcome these problems, we propose a hash-based query cac...

Use of Internet caches is a cheap and eeective way to improve performance for all Internet users. Distributed caches ooer the potential to serve larger user communities and to deliver higher hit ratios on shared Web documents. The key to building eeective distributed caches is a directory structure that allows individual caching servers to locate objects cached at neighboring sites, combining t...
متن کاملBeyond Hierarchies: Design Considerations for Distributed Caching on the Internet
In this paper, we examine several distributed caching strategies to improve the response time for accessing data over the Internet. By studying several Internet caches and workloads, we derive four basic design principles for large scale distributed caches: (1) minimize the number of hops to locate and access data, (2) do not slow down misses, (3) share data among many caches, and (4) cache dat...
متن کاملA Taste of Crispy Squid
Distributed proxy caches are in use throughout the world to reduce access latency and bandwidth demands for Internet object transfer. The CRISP project seeks to build more eeective distributed Web caches by exploring alternatives to the hierarchical structure and multicast handling of probes common to the most popular distributed Web cache systems. CRISP caches are structured as a collective of...
متن کاملClassification of Web Caching Systems
The Internet has been experiencing a phenomenal growth in the past decade. The World Wide Web has also been growing at the same rate. Web traffic comprises two thirds of all the activity on the Internet. The growth is in terms of increasing numbers of servers, and increasing numbers of users that want to access the huge amounts of information distributed at vast geographical sites. Therefore, i...
